The Engine Star Universe
For thousands of years, three human civilizations existed independent and ignorant of one another. Each inhabited their own planet in separate corners of the universe. Each presumed their homeworld was the only one that harbored life. But they were wrong…
Each civilization discovered a mysterious, alien object close to the planet they called home. These humans investigated these massive structures and realized they were gates to a new system of planets far different but very much like their own. Unlike their home systems, which revolved around natural stars, this new system of planets revolved around an artificial star they would come to call Odea. They named this system the Conflux.
They found the Conflux to be abundant in a new, immensely powerful substance called Nephelium. Through experimentation, they discovered near endless applications for the potent, purple matter. Chief among them is the ability to harness the power of gravity. No longer was it necessary to fly airtight cans through the universe. They could now generate enough gravity around their ships to create atmospheric bubbles in the vacuum of space. They also learned they could control the flow of gravity or negate it entirely. Nephelium could also be used to manipulate mass within a given body, which made faster than light travel possible. Furthermore, they found many human applications. Nephelium can be used to operate bionic limbs and cybernetic implants. It can also be used to catalyse rapid, controlled evolution. The substance can even be inhaled, offering glimpses into the dark unknown. The limits of cognition and intuition were pushed to unimaginable new heights, and it seemed a new dawn was breaking.
Then, they made the most shocking discovery of all: eachother. Not only were humans not alone in the universe, they weren’t eve the only human life in the universe. With a vast new territory to be claimed and an invaluable natural resource in play, humans did what they do best: they went to war. For 300 years, they waged a brutal campaign against one another, each vying for their claim to to the Conflux and the bounty within. Massive losses were sustained on all sides. The war didn’t so much end as the gears of war faltered and ground to a halt. Now is a time of rebuilding and rearming.
Lacking the ability to enforce any kind of law, the Conflux has become virtually lawless; a nightmare for the meek and civilized, but a paradise for those with the cunning and guile to survive its anarchyThen, they made the most shocking discovery of all: each other. Not only were these humans not alone in the universe, they weren’t even the only humans. With vast new territories to be claimed and an invaluable natural resource to contend with, humans did what they do best: they went to war. For 300 years, the Conflux saw countless minor wars and skirmishes against one another as each civilization vied for control over the colonies of the Conflux and the bounty they coveted.
Then the real war came. A massive Conflux-wide conflict that brought death and destruction to nearly every corner of the system. Massive losses were sustained on all sides. Only a dread new disease and a secret bloodletting was able to bring it to a conclusion. Now is a time of rebuilding and rearming as the Conflux enjoys an unsteady peace.
With the civilizations in retreat to lick their wounds, there is almost no one left to enforce any kind of law. The Conflux has become a pirate’s dream; a nightmare for the meek and the weak and the peacefully civilized, but a paradise for those with the cunning and guile to survive its anarchy.
